Jacks Win Home Opener

Tyler Cayemberg had a goal and an assist as the Granite City Lumberjacks began their NA3HL season with a 4-3 win over the Twin City Steel on Saturday night before 360 at Sports Arena East.

Cayemberg scored at 5:01 of the third period but the Lumberjacks had to sweat out a late Twin City rally.

The Steel scored twice in the last 15 minutes. Grant Holler stopped six shots to get the win in net for the Lumberjacks, relieving starter Matt Grove (13 saves) halfway through the second period.

Granite City’s power play converted on 3 of its 17 opportunites (18 percent) and the Lumberjacks killed off 12 of their 13 penalties. Granite City won the shots-on-goal battle, 30-22.

Nick LaRue, Trevor Ness and Zac Sikich had the other Lumberjacks goals.

The Lumberjacks play Peoria at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the Schwans Super Rink in the Blaine Showcase.
