Suess leads Granite City over Alexandria, 11-3

John Suess was all over the ice for Granite City, as he tallied one goal and three assists in Granite City\’s 11-3 win over Alexandria.

Suess got on the board by slotting home a goal 5:00 into the second period to make the score 4-1 Granite City. Adam Marty provided the assist. Suess dished an assist on Spencer Nelson\’s goal that made the score 2-1 Granite City at 3:14 into the second period. He then added assists on Alex Durand\’s goal at 15:41 into the second and on Lucas Carroll\’s goal at 18:23 into the third.

Alexandria\’s 11 penalties came back to haunt it, as Alexandria let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

Granite City forced Alexandria\’s goaltenders to work in net, ripping 36 shots and forcing 25 saves. Evan Bisek made 21 stops and Chance Kremer made four. Granite City bested its season scoring average. Granite City averages 4.9 goals per game. Penalties took their toll on Granite City, as its penalty kill unit let in two power play goals. The defensemen of Granite City were also effective in Alexandria\’s zone, and came away with three goals.

Granite City also got points from Casey Esselman, who also had one goal and three assists, Michael Piehler, who also tallied two goals and one assist, Andrej Jamnicky, who also registered one goal and two assists, Carroll, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Durand, who also had one goal and one assist, and Matt Flom, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Will Mix also scored for Granite City. In addition, Granite City received assists from Tyler Mros, who had two and Tommy Hutsell, Kevin Finley, and Chase Di Bari, who contributed one each.

Alexandria racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. Alexandria had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Alexandria was helped by Logan Nelson, who registered one goal. Nelson scored on the power play 4:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Alexandria. Alexandria had taken the advantage when Granite City\’s Jamnicky got sent off for interference. Trent Olson assisted on the tally. Alexandria also had goals scored by Riley Holwegner and AJ Gullickson, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Alexandria were Jack Cernohous, who had two and Jack Mellstrom, Logan Norman, and Tyler Frischmon, who each chipped in one.

Nathan Isaacson made 24 saves for Granite City on 27 shots. Granite City incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
