Armstrong’s big game bests Granite City in 6-2 Peoria win

Levi Armstrong had two goals and one assist to lead the Peoria Mustangs to a 6-2 victory over the Granite City Lumberjacks.

Armstrong found the back of the net 6:30 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Peoria and again while 13:38 into the third to make the score 5-2 Peoria.

Peoria forced Lumberjacks\’ goaltenders to work in net, taking 31 shots and forcing 25 saves. Kendall Meyer made 17 stops and Sam Goetsch made eight.

Peoria additionally got points from Chance Homerin, who also grabbed two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Peoria included Andrej Buchko and Austin Wisely, who scored one goal each. More assists for Peoria came via Marshall Gevers, who had two and Nathan Scofield, Jason Hoehn, and Mark Candotti, who contributed one each.

Granite City\’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Peoria power plays. The Lumberjacks did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Granite City averages 4.3 goals per game. The Mustangs were unable to stop the Lumberjacks from sending pucks towards the net, and Granite City eventually piled up 42 shots on goal. The Lumberjacks\’ defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Granite City averages 2.1 goals allowed per game.

The Lumberjacks were led by Dallas Marvin, who registered one goal and one assist. Marvin scored 7:43 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Peoria. Jared Sprink assisted on the tally. Mitchell Gwost also scored for Granite City. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Luke Richardson, who had one.

Marc Hayton made 40 saves for Peoria on 42 shots. The Mustangs incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Granite City incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
