Jacks Split 2

Dec 2, 2013

Wednesday:

Alexandria Blizzard 3 @ Granite City Lumberjacks 2 – The Alexandria Blizzard and the Granite City Lumberjacks played a pre-thanksgiving showdown and it was the Blizzard who came out on top 3-2 in a thriller.

It took a while for both teams to get the scoring started, but it was Ian Ecklund scoring a shorthanded goal to get the Blizzard up 1-0. The Lumberjacks leading scorer Drew Otto didn't let the lead last very long as he scored to bring the game to 1-1 tie less than two minutes later with assists to Aidan Verbeke and Mitchell Gwost. It didn't take long after that for the Blizzard to get the lead back after as Joe Anderson put Alexandria back up 2-1 with an assist to Jake Maxson.

After a scoreless 2nd period, the Blizzard would take a 3-1 lead on the eventual game-winning goal from Tom Schmidt with assists to Mick Dhein and Garrett Skinner. Zach Sikich added a late 3rd period goal to cut the lead to 3-2 with assists to Brett Love and another to Gwost. However, that would be all the Lumberjacks could get on the night as the Blizzard came out on top with the strong goaltending play of Tanner Elmore who made 33 saves and picked up the big midweek victory. Austin Wilson took the loss, making 24 saves.

Saturday:

Granite City Lumberjacks 9 @ Breezy Point North Stars 2: Aidan Verbeke scored two goals and added three assists as he powered the Granite City offense to a lopsided victory over the Breezy Point North Stars. Verbeke scored a goal in each period to complete the hat trick and was aided by Drew Otto, who added four assists for the Lumberjacks. Bo Borowski and Blair Seitz picked up the goals for Breezy Point. Granite City goaltender Scott Murray stopped 27 shots in the win for the Lumberjacks.
