Granite City blows out Breezy Point, 6-1

The Granite City Lumberjacks were firing on all cylinders against the Breezy Point North Stars, and when the final buzzer sounded Lumberjacks emerged with a 6-1 win.

Granite City got points from Alex Koopmeiners, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Alex Carson, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Nick Turbitt, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Zac Sikich, Mitchell Gwost and Blake Phenow also scored for Granite City. Assists for Granite City came via Aidan Verbeke, Isaac Hoagland, Brett Love, Roy Grandov, Drew Otto, and Nathan Kohlenhoefer, who each chipped in one.

The Lumberjacks' Austin Wilson stopped 21 shots out of the 22 that he faced. 

 

Granite City Falls to North Iowa 4-1

 

The Lumberjacks fell to the North Iowa Bulls Saturday night in Mason City IA.  The Jacks came out strong and held the play early in the first but gave up a shorthanded goal to North Iowa as they killed off an early 5 minute Power Play.   The teams exchanged chances the remainder of the period.  Shots in the first period were 10-9 Granite City.

Granite City fell into penalty trouble early in the second.  Three straight penalties by the Jacks and two power play goals for North Iowa and the Lumberjacks were down 3-0.  Brett Love was unsuccessful in a penalty shot midway thru the second but the power play got the Jacks on the board.   Mitchell Gwost one timed an Aidan Verbeke backhand pass from the corner.  Drew Otto also assisted on the play.  Shots in the second period were once again 10-9 Granite City.

The Lumberjacks didn’t give themselves a chance for a comeback in the third.  They took 13 minutes of penalties including a 5 minute major.   They were able to kill them off but did give up a 5-5 goal 6 minutes in.   The Lumberjacks were outshot in the period 9 to 4.

Scott Murray saved 23 of 27 shot in the loss for Granite City.
