Phenow nets hat trick, leads Granite City to 7-0 win over Minnesota

A hat trick by Blake Phenow was the highlight in Lumberjacks' 7-0 win against the Minnesota Flying Aces.

Phenow got on the scoresheet 20:00 into the first period. He then added goals at 18:49 into the second and at 17:12 into the third.

 

The Granite City Lumberjacks were boosted by Kendall Meyer, who turned in a shutout with 26 saves.

Granite City put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Minnesota to score on any of its nine power plays. The Lumberjacks forced the Flying Aces goalie Jaxson Gosnell to work between the pipes, taking 48 shots. Granite City could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game.

Granite City additionally got points from David Kenney, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Granite City included Tanner Skaja, Alek Groth, and Dallas Marvin, who each put in one. In addition, Granite City received assists from Travis Kothenbeutel, who had three, Corey Taylor, Kevin Finley, Jared Sprink, and David Horsmann, who each chipped in one, and Travis Kemp and Sam Zweiner, who contributed two each.

Minnesota's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 48 minutes in penalty time. The Flying Aces surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Minnesota could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Flying Aces average 2.6 goals per game.

The Lumberjacks registered four goals on nine power play opportunities. Minnesota's Gosnell stopped 41 shots out of the 48 that he faced. For the Flying Aces, AJ Gullickson was ejected from the game.
